“Ghosts save lost hiker” is not the type of news headline you’d expect to see, but a tale of spectral heroes is currently making its way across the circuit. On November 10th, 2019, 60-year-old Soong Rui-Xiong went out for a hike in a region of Taiwan known as Pingtung. In standard horror movie fashion, he lost his way in the wilderness, his cellphone died, and ghosts came out of the woodwork. Where this ghost story differs, is the spirits were the heroes for this lost hiker.

When he didn’t come home that evening, his family called the police. They managed to amass a search party of 111 police and fire officials, and another 284 civilians. They ventured into the mountains to find Rui-xing but turned up nothing. Ten days passed before he emerged with a fascinating tale.

Rui-Xiong fell and lost his glasses when attempting to climb a rock wall. Unable to see and somewhat panicked, he hid in a cave. He stayed within the confines of the cave for a few days until finally realizing he had to try to find his way down the mountain.

The disoriented hiker wandered back out into the wilderness and oddly enough, happened upon a couple. The couple helped guide him through the forest. He spent 2-hours with his mysterious saviors before they simply disappeared.

Once again feeling confused and alone, he frantically looked for them but found the path to civilization instead. Rui-Xiong believes they were ancestral spirit guides sent to lead him back home.
