Critically, The Nun 2 has received mixed reviews. However, it seems most find this latest installment to be a big improvement over the 2018 film. Currently, it has grossed $258 million worldwide, making it a commercial success for director Michael Chaves. This marks his second film within the Conjuring Universe. The first was in 2021, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

What is the plot of The Nun 2?

The Nun 2 takes place 4 years after its predecessor, in 1956 France. An investigation into the violent murder of a priest leads sister Irene (played by Taissa Farminga) to face the demon nun, Valak (Bonnie Aarons) once again. For those who remember the ending of 2018’s The Nun, this may leave you a bit befuddled as to how or why that scenario would come about. For those who still haven’t seen the first film: SPOILER WARNING BELOW and you have 10 days left to watch the Nun (2018) free on TUBI.

Franchise fans voice preemptive plot concerns

The first film ended with good old Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) clearly carrying Valak out of the Abbey and into the world. The connection to the Warrens comes in when Frenchie (Maurice) gets an exorcism in the 1970s. We see that exorcism footage during Ed and Lorraine’s lecture in the beginning of The Conjuring. This ties the films together and explains why Valak keeps popping up on Lorraine Warren.

However, this is farther in the future than 1954, and certainly not set in France. Since we know Valak inhabits Frenchie until the 1970s, this may seem like an error, as a reviewer on IMDB pointed out. But it’s actually not. At least not in the world of demonology. I’ll explain why, in exactly the way the real Ed and Lorraine would if they were alive today.

Don’t worry, it all checks out – though that may be purely accidental.

Demons are after access – there’s no time limit on that access. Time is a very human concept.

When it comes to demonic possession, all that beast needs is consent – once. That permission lasts indefinitely. They don’t have to take over immediately. They can come and go as they please. Since time passage is very different for them, they can remain dormant, or simply leave and come back at a time that is more opportunistic for them. When the host is weaker and/or better positioned in life to create more damage or further some darker agenda. That is why it’s so important to perform the exorcism and revoke access, even if things suddenly stop. Especially, if the entity agrees to leave on its own. This means cast out the demon and revoke consent to any and all future access. Like changing the locks when evicting someone. The owner of the house (body) has to revoke consent – not someone else.

The Conjuring Universe is still expanding

As far as possible error within the storyline as a whole, there is still quite a bit of story to go. Lots of paper and ink to weave an intricate web of connections together. The Conjuring Universe is still expanding – don’t forget, there is still an entire Conjuring TV series in the works! Don’t let plot point connections throw you off now.
